LUCHTSTILTE

An art/science project in Amsterdam Oost by NOW,

in collaboration with Genetic Choir, air quality scientist Astrid Manders,

broedplaats GROND, and Plein Theater.

“The average Amsterdammer lives one year less due to air pollution.”

Marion Tränkle and Ivo Bol, together with the Genetic Choir, are creating an interactive performance about the impact of air quality in Amsterdam Oost. Measurements of fine particulate matter (PM) on the Mauritskade are used in the live performance as a guideline and threshold—a cause for changes in the performance. The ever changing levels of particulate matter become a decisive factor that alters the singers’ score, the sounds, and the lighting in real time during the show. Critical values are used as dramatic moments, giving the audience insight into the consequences of air pollution: how do we deal with the cumulative effect of all our behaviors (mobility, location), and how can we respond to this collectively as a community?

TNO researcher Astrid Manders will talk about her research at TNO and explain where fine particulate matter comes from.

As the duo NOW, Marion Tränkle and Ivo Bol create performances and light/sound installations inspired by the world around us. The Genetic Choir composes music in the moment. The vocalists train themselves as a musical organism—a small human society that interacts with each other in sound and silence, becoming music.
